Bust of Stanisław Konarski

Le Brun, André (1737-1811) (sculptor)
ZKW/3400
The likeness of Stanisław Konarski in a cassock with a zucchetto on his head was part of the Royal Castle’s historic collections. Alongside the sculptures of Chronos and Fame, as well as a series of bronze busts of famous Polish personages and the painted decoration, it constitutes the iconographic scheme for the Knights’ Hall which was furnished in the years 1781–6 and was intended to commemorate distinguished individuals as well as glorious events in Polish history. The sculpture is one of 18 smaller busts that were placed in the Knights’ Hall and is one of three sculptural depictions of contemporaneous personages which Le Brun could have made ad vivum, thanks to which it bears the sitter’s real features. Inscribed STA: KONARSKI. on front of base. Stanisław (real name Hieronim Franciszek) Konarski of the Gryf coat of arms (1700–73). Son of Jerzy, Sword Bearer of Inowrocław and Helena née Czermińska. Clergyman, political and social activist, essayist. Reformer of Pijarist education and founder of the Collegium Nobilium in Warsaw. Author of the treatise O skutecznym rad sposobie albo o utrzymywaniu ordynaryjnych sejmów [On useful counsel or on the usefulness of ordinary parliament].
