Bust of Andrzej Chryzostom Załuski

Monaldi, Giacomo (1730-1798) (sculptor)
ZKW/3397
The depiction of Andrzej Chryzostom Załuski, in a cassock wearing a zucchetto was part of the Royal Castle’s historic collections. Alongside the sculptures of Chronos and Fame, as well as a series of bronze busts of famous Polish personages and the painted decoration, it constitutes the iconographic scheme for the Knights’ Hall which was furnished in the years 1781–6 and was intended to commemorate distinguished individuals as well as glorious events in Polish history. The sculpture is one of 18 smaller busts that were placed in the Knights’ Hall. The iconographic models on which Załuski’s bust may have been based are two engravings by Martin Bernigeroth the Elder dating from 1709 and Joducus Egidius Krauss probably made before 1718. Inscribed Załuski on front, under the bust. Inscribed ANDR. ZAŁUSKI / + MDCCXI. in gold letters on front of base. Andrzej Chryzostom Załuski of the Junosza coat of arms (1650–1711). Son of Aleksander, Voivode of Rawa and Katarzyna née Olszowska. Bishop of Kiev from 1683, Płock from 1692, or Ermland [now Warmia] from 1699. Grand Chancellor of the Crown from 1702. He participated in diplomatic missions to Spain, Portugal, France, Rome and Holland. Author of religious works, speeches and sermons.
