Covered Goblet

Menzel, Johann Sigismund (1744-1810) (warsztat)
ZKW/393/ab
The goblet is typical of the vessels made by the workshop of Johann Sigismund Menzel, a glass engraver active in Cieplice in Silesia in the late 18th century. Neoclassical goblets and wineglasses were made in his workshop and decorated with double-wall medallions. Gold foil, engraved with silhouettes (busts in profile) and then painted black, was placed between the two walls of glass.. This goblet is decorated with likeness of Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia and his wife Louise. The personages portrayed included members of the Schaffgotsch family, which made a considerable contribution to the development of glassware in the Lower Silesian region. Some of Menzel’s work is signed and dated.
