Text description

Candle holder with Hercules figure

Author unknown from the Saxon court circle
ZKW/5446/1
The figure of Hercules, expressively curved, with detailed musculature and a lion's skin flung over his shoulder, is directly reminiscent of the depiction of the Hero from Christian Wermuth's 1704-1705 medal and the slightly earlier ivory relief by Balthasar Permoser, which probably provided the prototype for the medallist. Hercules personifies Augustus the Strong (Hercules Saxonicus) in these representations.
