One of six paintings of subjects from Polish history commissioned for the Knights’ Hall at the Royal Castle in Warsaw. In the catalogues of the Stanisław August collection the painting is unnumbered; in the 1795 catalogue it is listed as: “L’investiture de Prusse". The subject of this painting is the homage paid to the Polish King Zygmunt I the Old by Duke Albrecht of Hohenzollern (1490–1568) in Kraków on 10 April 1525. Following the dissolution of the Teutonic Order and secularization of its lands, the Order’s Grand Master became Duke of Prussia and a vassal of the Polish King. The frame is decorated with a plaque inscribed: PRUSSIA IN FIDEM DATA A. MDXXV.
