One of six paintings of subjects from Polish history commissioned for the Knights’ Hall at the Royal Castle in Warsaw. In the catalogues of the Stanisław August collection, the painting is unnumbered; in the 1795 catalogue it is listed as: “Vladislas Jagello fondant l’Académie de Cracovie". In order to fulfil the will of his deceased wife Queen Jadwiga, between 22–6 July 1400 in Kraków, King Władysław Jagiełło renovated and endowed the Kraków Academy (today’s Jagiellonian University) which had been founded by King Kazimierz III the Great in 1364. The frame is decorated with a plaque inscribed: ACAD: CRAC: INSTITUTA A. MCCCC.
