The painting is listed in the 1795 catalogue of the Stanisław August collection under no. 1164. Władysław III of Varna (1424–44) of the Jagiellon dynasty, King of Poland (reg. 1434–44), King of Hungary (reg. 1440–4); fell at the Battle of Varna. Inscribed on the back: VLADISLAUS/ VARNENSIS nuncupatus,/ Vladislaj Jagiellonis Filius,/ Natus d: 31. 8bris. Ao 1424./ Coronatus d: 25. Julij./ AEtatis suae: 20/ Regni vero 10./ Injusti Belli luit poenas/ deceptus/ Nro 8. The marble plaque beneath the painting is inscribed: VLADISLAUS VARNENSIS/ + MCCCCXLIV.
