Text description

Dionisio Ruggieri (?)

Sogari, Prospero (1516-1584) (rzeźbiarz)
ZKW/5787
Bust of an elderly man with very pronounced facial features. Prominent cheekbones, large deep-set eyes, a high forehead with horizontal wrinkles, deep wrinkles running from the nose to the chin, a moustache and a wavy beard, bushy eyebrows - all these features indicate the realism of the portrait. The man is dressed in a kind of densely pleated dalmatine put on over the head, with a round, small neckline. The bust has no signature or other marks that could clearly identify the author and the model. There is no information on the earlier provenance. It is probably the work of Prospero Sogari, an Italian sculptor from the Reggio Emilia region. The considerable similarities with an object in the collection of the Palazzo dei Musei Reggio nell'Emilia suggest that the bust depicts the lawyer Dionisio Ruggieri (Ruggeri), born around 1530.
