Le Brun, André (1737-1811) (sculptor)
ZKW/3380
The painted decoration, it constitutes the iconographic scheme for the Knights’ Hall which was furnished in the years 1781–6 and was intended to commemorate distinguished individuals as well as glorious events in Polish history. The sculpture is one of four so-called great portrait busts. When modelling the bust of Sapieha, Le Brun probably made use of a print by Pierre Laudry dating from 1663. In the etching, Sapieha was depicted as being of the same age, with a long moustache, characteristic shaved head and the same type of armour. Signed by the bronze founder JOHANN EHRENFRIED / DIETRICH / GOSS MICH IN WARSCHAU / 1786 on back, under the bust. Inscribed: PAULUS: SAPIEHA. / + MDCLXVII. on gold letters on front of base.
