Stanisław August Poniatowski

Folino, Bartolomeo da (1730-1808) (rytownik), Teigl (fl. ca 1784) (autor wzoru)
ZKW/1305
Half-length portrait of the King shown in a Catogan wig and frock coat against a neutral, dark background. He wears the riband of the Order of the White Eagle (awarded in 1756) with an ermine-lined cloak, embroidered with eagles over his right shoulder, and the inscription REX ST ANIS. AUG. POL. around the border. He wears a stock and jabot around the neck. The portrait is depicted within an oval frame which is surmounted with an eagle with outspread wings, with two laurel branches in its beak which spill down either side of the oval. The oval is located within an architectural frame consisting of a pedestal with an inscription which is separated by a heraldic cartouche, while two pilasters flank the portrait and support the entablature. The pedestal bears an inscription separated by an escutcheon, divided into five fields, surmounted with a crown and the White Eagle and Lithuanian Pogoń (reversed) and the Ciołek coat of arms of the Poniatowski family in the centre. There are four editions of the print, published by W. Cox in 1784, 1785, 1787 and 1792. The model for the engraving was the only known copy of Stanisław August in Armour painted in the years 1766–71 by M. Bacciarelli. The copper engraving after this portrait was made by Bartolomeo Folino; Teigl copied the latter likeness and pose of the King, dispensing with the armour. Signed: bottom right: Teigl sculpsit London 1783. publisher’s address at bottom: Publish’d according to Act of Parliament Jan.r 1.st . 1784. by vol.
