The likeness shown on the engraving is based on a painting by Marcello Bacciarelli which has not survived. A replica of this likeness, dating from 1776, is housed in the National Museum in Poznań and there is also an 18th–century copy in the Royal Castle in Warsaw. Half-length portrait of the King shown en face wearing, according to the fashion of the day, a Catogan wig, white stock and jabot about his neck. He is dressed in armour and an ermine-lined cloak embroidered with an eagle over his right shoulder. He also wears the riband of the Order of the White Eagle awarded in 1756 and the Order of the Black Eagle, awarded in 1763, about his neck. The likeness is depicted within an oval surmounted with an eagle holding olive branches in its beak which spill down the sides of the frame and are finished off with tassels. The oval is within an architectural frame supported on a pedestal, with pilasters on either side supporting the cornice. On the pedestal is an inscription, separated by the coat of arms of Poland beneath a crown with the Ciołek coats of arms of the Poniatowski family in the centre, which is also surmounted with a crown. Signed: bottom left: Marcel: Bacciarelli pinx. bottom right: Barth: Folin Del et Sculps: Varsavia 1778. Inscribed on pedestal: STANISLAUS AUGUSTUS/ D: G: REX POLONIA/ M: D: LITVANIA ET: C: C:/ ELECTS DIE VII SEPTEM ANNO DO: MDCCLXIV. Comments: Incorrect depiction of the coat of arms of Poland and Lithuania; the Eagle and Pogoń (Charging Knight) should be the other way round.
